Courtney Mills

I joined Daugherty Luckey in April 2026, where I focus my practice on family law. My career is rooted in the belief that the law should be a tool for helping people, protecting their rights, and ensuring that everyone is treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.

Before joining Daugherty Luckey, I spent more than a decade as an attorney and advisor for the federal government and in non-profit organizations. My career has taken me from advocating for individual rights to advising senior federal officials on some of the highest profile issues of our time. I served as a primary legal advisor on election security and resilience at the national’s cybersecurity agency, trained teams of attorneys, and have successfully advocated for statutory changes across the country. Those experiences taught me how to remain calm when the stakes are high, advocate persuasively, quickly make sense of complicated situations, and give thoughtful advice when important decisions need to be made.

These skills translate naturally to my family law practice. I understand that when someone comes to a family law attorney, the legal issues they are facing are rarely just legal issues. They affect every aspect of their life, including their children and plans for the future. These matters are deeply personal and deserve a personalized approach. My clients are not simply cases to be managed or legal problems to be solved. I care about understanding who they are, what they are going through, and what they want their lives and families to look like when their case is over.

I strive to be a steady presence for my clients by listening carefully, explaining options clearly, and anticipating issues before they arise. Clients appreciate my attention to detail, ability to stay composed under pressure, and the personal care I bring to their representation.

I earned by J.D. from William & Mary School of Law, where I graduated in the top 15 percent of my class and earned numerous moot court awards. I earned my undergraduate degree, cum laude, from the University of Florida. I have been a member of the Virginia Bar since 2011 and am also admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and before the Supreme Court of the United States. I am also a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US).

Outside of the office, I enjoy gardening, watching college sports, and most of all, spending time with my husband and daughter.
